SIC Code

Standard Industrial Classification codes are a widely accepted method of categorizing types of businesses.  SIC codes are displayed at the 8-digit level, and SIC search criteria may be specified up to the 8-digit level.

Companies may have multiple SIC codes assigned to them. The first, or Primary SIC code, describes the establishment’s major product line or service. Any additional SIC codes describe secondary goods or services provided by the firm.

When searching by SIC, use the check boxes to designate whether your search should be based upon a company’s Primary SIC or All SIC codes associated with a company.  Specify SIC codes in one of three ways: by typing in the SIC codes, by searching for SIC codes by keyword, or by browsing a tree structure of SIC codes.

To specify one or more SIC codes or a range of codes directly, simply type them in, either as single values separated by commas, or as a range of values.  For example:

3841

38410408

2816, 2824

2000-3999

To find SIC codes by keyword, enter a keyword or a character string followed by an asterisk wildcard. The click ‘Find’. The Million Dollar Database will display all of the SIC codes that include that keyword. Check the ones that you want to include in your search, and click ‘Return to SIC page’.

The SIC tree structure enables you to quickly specify one or more major or minor SIC groups for your search.  You can easily drill down to the 2-, 4-, and 8-digit SIC level.

Click the plus sign next to a level to expand it; click on it again to collapse it.  Use the checkboxes to specify your selection criteria.  Notice that when you check a major category or a 2-or 4-digit SIC, all of the SIC codes beneath it are automatically checked.  To de-select an SIC or an SIC category, click the box again so that it is unchecked.
